Panke - Postille summer edition 2001 Written by Bernd Schimmler In Wedding - usually called the cultural desert - without knowing that the desert lives, one finds sometimes surprises. But one has to read the national newspapers and magazines carefully to discover that the area has people and ideas, which seem not worth reporting to local journalists because it is not mentioned in the "New York Times" either. Even our Chancellor needs three years to get on page three and is rarely recognized by CNN. Wedding's chef, Uwe Bressem, of the Kantine im Rathaus (the restaurant at city hall in Wedding) who has hardened himself in five star hotels in London, Geneva and Berlin, does not only cook nowadays for our bureaucrats, but has continuously raised some interest with his Mailart, his other projects and now with his RabART. By mail and e-mail he received, from 17 different artists worldwide 64 different images for RabARTmarken (coupons). If you go to his restaurant you will receive a stamp with every dish you buy and in the end when you filled your little booklet with 16 RabARTmarken you receive a bonus of DM 1.60. BUT! We do not hear about this from our local journalists but from the Frankfurter Rundschau from 27.06.2001. Could it be that RabART would become a hit if our "Berlin cultural schickeria" instead of going to the "Paris Bar" would visit the Rathaus Kantine? Only once try the dumplings in the Kantine! Maybe in the long run the miniatures of Bressem and his artist friends do even become valuable on the long run. I still remember my old schoolteacher talking about how he missed to by a Roy Lichtenstein for DM 500, today worth a fortune. So! Up to Uwe Bressem into the Rathaus! Dive into the depth of the so called cultural desert. |
