How a Chef Became an Artist

Text and Photo by Bernd Wähner
Berliner Wochenblatt - January 2003

Wedding. For Philatelists he is already a star. Uwe Bressem designs ARTISTAMPS. Most of the people in Wedding might know Uwe Bressem in a different context. Uwe Bressem has been the tenant of the cafeteria at City hall until last year.

How does someone get the idea to design artistamps? Bressem reports: "In 1980 I was working for the "Hotel Intercontinental" in London, when under the patronage of the Queen a huge Stampexibithion was opened. We catered the buffet for the event. I risked an eye to look behind the doors and since then I spend my time designing covers and stamps."

In the beginning he did send his works of art only to members of his family and friends. Meanwhile he is in contact with other artists and sends his covers around the world.

"I gave up the cafeteria and started to work as a fulltime artist". With growing sucsess. He designed, for example, comemmorative stamps for the first flight of cargolifter´s airship. Those stamps were canceled on bord and are today with a market price of 20 Euros per sheet worth more than a share of the insolvent company.

With great sucsess he exhibited his art at the "Milchmeergalerie". Some of his stampart can be found in Moscow´s museum of modern art.

"This year I´ll mainly work on a concept for Berlin´s Sugarmuseum at Amrumer Strasse", explains Bressem with pleasure of anticipation. "The museum will celebrate it´s 100th anniversary next year and I am developing the "Sugarjumper", a figur which will guide the visitors through the Jubelee year."

One of his recent creations is Bressem's first Wedding donation stamp. A sheet of the stamps can be purchased for 10 Euros and the money is used to support art with and for kids. Want to learn more? Contact stampchef@uweBressem.com
